This special issue of the journal Water Economics and Policy (WEP) aims to highlight new advances in transboundary river basin management. The special issue also aims to highlight challenges and lessons learned from experiences in transboundary river basin management and economic development over the past two decades. We welcome original research articles and reviews with a theoretical and/or case study focus. The special issue addresses a variety of themes including, but not limited to:

Characterizing and managing hydrological and metrological extremes in transboundary river basins.
Managing the impacts of climate change in transboundary river basins.
Addressing climate change adaptation in transboundary river basins.
Designing efficient, robust, balanced management interventions in transboundary water resource systems.
Multi-objective optimization applications in transboundary river basin planning and management.
Using hydro-economic and economy-wide models in transboundary river basin planning and management.
Economic consequences of basin-wide management options.
Advances in representing conflict and cooperation between riparian countries in water resource systems models.
Governance and institutional arrangements for transboundary river basin management.
Representation of human social-economic behavior in transboundary water resource systems models.
Cross-basin comparison of challenges and lessons.
